NRHH Overview
The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is the recognition branch of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH, http://www.nacurh.org/ ). NACURH, as an organization, truly believes that recognition is a must in a strong Residence Hall community. As such, CNU NRHH is there to make sure that we don't forget to give those much needed and well deserved pats on the back.
The way NRHH works here at Christopher Newport is through the Elite Captains chapter. It is a body of some of the most talented leaders on campus, who convene once a month for a general meeting to recognize excellence in the residence hall community. NRHH members discuss and vote as a whole on which nominations they will send to be considered for a FoX award (Focus on Excellence) at the state level . This is done through the Virginia Association of College and University Residence Halls (VACURH) who choose from the best programs out of all Virginia schools.
The CNU NRHH chapter members represent the top 1% of the student leaders on campus and are those who have contributed extraordinary amounts of personal time and energy in order to make the residence halls more than just a "dorm." NRHH recognizes those top leaders on campus, both members and non members by nominating them for state wide awards through NACURH. Only 1% of students living in the residence halls can be inducted into NRHH, so once inducted into NRHH you can consider yourself in the top 1% of residence hall leaders.

During the preliminary organization, NRHH focused on the incorporation of old into new. Campuses with existing honorary organizations were contacted and coordinated into the NRHH structure. The preservation of chapter identity a primary goal, it was incorporated into the NRHH structure, and as each campus is aware of its own individual needs. The primary focus of each chapter became the recognition of the residence hall leaders on its campus. This helped sustain a consistent membership in on-campus organizations as well as on the regional and national levels within NACURH.
The years between 1977 and 1987 were years of growth for the NRHH. Pins and certificates were produced to recognize the members of the Honorary, the traditions of both regional and national receptions during conferences began as did formal recruitment and the production of affiliation packets. Many awards were established including Program, National Communications Coordinator, Advisor, Student, and Resident Assistant of the Month. Also created was the Outstanding Chapter of the Year award. |

Today, over 170 chapters are affiliated with the National Residence Hall Honorary National Office. Activities of the chapters vary from campus to campus. Some simply induct new members at an annual recognition banquet this year, thus, an honorary chapter. Others are extremely active on their campuses and in their communities, coordinating leadership retreats, conferences, socials, hall or campus wide programs, fund raisers, and a whole host of other events. Still others have found a middle ground which suits their campus. CNU NRHH fits into this last category. NRHH strives to reach out to the campus community and get its name out there from time to time, but primarily focuses on recognizing superb leadership in the Residence Hall Communit |
