How Do I Know If I Have A Problem?
Alcohol and other drug abuse is marked by continued use despite recurrent social, occupational, financial, psychological, legal or physical problems that are caused by the use of the drug; OR recurrent use in situations in which it is hazardous (e.g., driving while intoxicated). Take an honest look at the warning signs of alcohol or other drug abuse problems and consult one of the resources listed below for assistance with interpreting what these "red flags" mean for you.

Warning Signs

  • Underage drinking or use of illegal drugs
  • Denying, rationalizing or minimizing use
  • Trying to hide your drinking or other drug use
  • Blackouts or memory loss after drinking or using
  • Drinking or using other drugs to handle school, work or stress
  • Problems in relationships at home, school or work because of alcohol or other drug use
  • Frequently drinking five or more drinks in a row
  • Taking physical risks, like driving under the influence
  • Thinking about getting drunk or high on a regular basis
  • Limiting friends to those who drink or use other drugs
  • Having major behavior and/or personality change
  • Unable to have a good time or to party unless alcohol or other drugs are available
  • "Needing" a drink or drug
  • Doing embarrassing things when drunk or high
  • Stealing or doing other illegal things to get alcohol or other drugs
  • Getting angry when someone mentions they are concerned about your alcohol or other drug use
  • Having a history of alcohol or other drug problems in your family

  • Where And How To Get Help

    On-campus, help is available through the Center for Counseling, Coaching and Consulting, Student Center Room 146, where you can receive assessment, support counseling, and referral information for treatment 757. 594.7047.
