Center for Honor Enrichment & Community Standards
(CHECS)

Honor is a lifestyle choice. Leading an honorable life prepares
CNU students to assume leadership roles in their communities
as well as in their chosen profession. A major emphasis of
the Center for Honor Enrichment & Community Standards
is helping students explore honorable living in the classroom and on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

CHECS, in conjunction with our academic colleagues, has primary responsibility for upholding the CNU Honor Code. Faculty, staff and students comprise the University Committee on Student Discipline, which regularly determines the acceptable standards of honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility for the CNU community.

CHECS also provides opportunities for students to consider how honor is grounded within their lives. The HONOR U campaign, designed to instill honorable decision-making and prevent pitfalls, routinely sponsors workshops and speakers, including best-selling author David Callahan (“The Cheating Culture”), Fortune 500 executive Walt Pavlo, and NY Times Magazine columnist Randy Cohen (“The Ethicist”). A new student organization, Student Honor Enrichment Assistants
(SHEA), offers additional programming, support and opportunities for student involvement within CNU’s community of honor.
